JWF Fellowships to the Poynter Institute for Print, Broadcast and Online News Journalists

Overview
The Jack Webster Foundation will fund two BC journalists to attend seminars at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida a school for journalists that has been offering short term professional development courses for more than 25 years. Full-time freelancers are also eligible for this opportunity.

These three to five day seminars are offered on a wide range of topics. Visit www.poynter.org to research the programs of interest to you.


Eligibility
If you are a British Columbia resident and/or a fulltime employee or correspondent for a BC print, broadcast or an online news organization, or a BC journalism educator, you are eligible for this fellowship.


Fellowship Funding
Fellowship funding includes:

  • Return air fare to St. Petersburg at the lowest fare price
  • Tuition
  • Accommodation
  • Per diem reimbursement (with receipts)


How to Apply

You will apply for the fellowship and, if selected, you will then apply to Poynter for admission into the seminar that you wish to attend and one alternative in case your first choice is not available. The Poynter website outlines the steps necessary to apply.

The Jack Webster Foundation will announce the two recipients on March 21. Recipients have until February 28, 2009 to attend their seminar.

Please provide the following in triplicate:

  • Completed application form
  • Current resume
  • A statement or essay of 250-500 words describing your daily duties, the relevance of the seminar to your job, your goals for the seminar and how you will apply the training back in your newsroom.
  • A letter from your employer supporting the application and confirming your availability to participate
