The Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award

The Jack Webster Foundation's Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award honours an exemplary BC journalism career.

Award Criteria
The award recognizes the careers of senior reporters and editors who have received distinction in their communities for work of long-lasting significance, clarity, fairness and innovation. The outstanding career of Bruce Hutchison (see information about him below) is a primary guide in reviewing potential candidates. Recipients of this award, like the Bill Good Award, are chosen by a decision of the Jack Webster Foundation Board of Directors. Please note that all other Jack Webster Awards are chosen by an independent juried process that operates at strict arm's-length from the Jack Webster Foundation Board of Directors.

The Jack Webster Foundation Announces Clive Jackson as the 2018 Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient

Clive JacksonFrom Fleet Street to the city streets of Vancouver where as a reporter his stories broke scandals and covered the events that defined these cities, Clive really 'wrote all about it' before he found his way to a TV station then called BCTV. His TV career began as a reporter for the newscast but he transitioned to the assignment desk in 1990 where he assigned stories that have become iconic in journalism in B.C. He also worked to build the station, now GlobalBC, into a news juggernaut which at one time was the third most watched local news show in North America. However Clive's legacy is measured in more than just ratings. At Global, in 2006, he helped raise five million dollars from viewers and government in just 96 hours to replace tens of thousands of trees blown down after a massive storm hit Vancouver's forested treasure, Stanley Park. He also played a key role in helping Vancouver Children's Hospital raise their goal of half a billion dollars to build their recently opened facility. Clive is known as a consummate journalist and management professional who is admired and deeply respected by those he's worked with.

About the Man Behind the Name of the Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award

In 1991, the Jack Webster Foundation established a lifetime achievement award and presented it to Canadian journalism legend and the award's namesake, Bruce Hutchison.

Hutchison's writing career stretched from 1918 at the Victoria Times Colonist to 1992 at the Vancouver Sun. In between, he worked for the Province, Winnipeg Free Press, Financial Post and Maclean's. He wrote more than a dozen books, received three national newspaper awards, four honourary university degrees and three governor general awards.

His published opinions helped shape Canadian public policy for several generations and his writing about the land and its people have had a major influence on the way we think about who we are and what we might become.
