Jack Webster Foundation Co-Chairs Neil Soper and Debora Sweeney today announced the recipients of seven Jack Webster Foundation Student Journalism Awards.

Joel McKay from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Cynthia Sohyoung Yoo and Megan Stewart from UBC Graduate School of Journalism, Joshua Hergesheimer and Jeff Lawrence from Langara College, Emma McLagan from BCIT Broadcast Journalism and Melissa Vasey from Thompson Rivers University are the 2008 recipients.

This program has been generously sponsored by BC Hydro since 2001 and the Hospital Employees' Union (HEU) since 2006. Funding from the Dennis Skulsky Student Journalism Fund has been received by the foundation since 2007. Each student receives $2,000 towards tuition.

"BC Hydro is pleased to support the Jack Webster Foundation as a sponsor of the Student Journalism Program, for the eighth year. BC Hydro is not only committed to providing reliable power for generations but also investing in programs that enhance communities throughout B.C. We're proud to have reached over 70 students across the Lower Mainland and Thompson Okanagan who are pursuing a career in journalism and shaping the story of our Province for generations to come," said Larina Lopez, Manager Community Investment & Outreach.

"These awards help ensure that students from a wide range of backgrounds have an opportunity to pursue a course of studies in journalism," says HEU secretary-business manager Judy Darcy. "Our union is very pleased to provide support for the next generation of B.C. journalists through the Jack Webster Foundation's excellent awards program."

A total of 79 BC journalism students have received educational funding since the program was initiated in 2001.

The Jack Webster Foundation was established in 1986 to recognize and encourage excellence in BC-based journalism in the name of Jack Webster and his legacy of insightful, accurate and uncompromising reporting during his more than 40 years of print, radio and television journalism.

The work of the Foundation is made possible by the generous sponsorship of Accenture,
Bell Canada, British Columbia Lottery Corporation, CGA Association, CN, HSBC Bank Canada, Labatt Breweries, Terasen Gas, Vancouver International Airport, Port Metro Vancouver and WorkSafe BC.
