A DAY AT THE RACES
During the first referendum on electoral change in New Zealand campaigners
for the First Past the Post system held a photo op at a horse racing track.
Horse racing and betting are a national passion. There are race tracks in many
relatively small towns throughout the country. On one
Wednesday
afternoon in November grandstands at the Paeroa Racing Club were half full. Thoroughbreds thundered around the
grass track. And between races spectators were only too happy to talk politics.
